Scouting For Girls – ‘Heartbeat’

Scouting For Girls – ‘Heartbeat’

Scouting for old Del Amitri records for 50p in charity shops, more like. Pining for the tuneful MOR jangle-pop of the 80s Scotsmen? Look no further. This is a jaunty, piano-led pine for an unrequited love: “I’ll walk you home safe, from the dark. I’ll give you my jacket, I’ll give you my heart,” pleads ivory-tinkling lead singer Roy Stride. Stop singing and you might be in with a chance, my friend. Within 12 months, says the press release, “they’ve gone from working dayshifts at Carphone Warehouse to being one of Britain’s most exuberant bands in years.” Our gain is most definitely the mobile phone retail market’s loss. Wet and weedy enough to make Travis sound like Napalm Death.

Helen Boulding – ‘Way To Go’

Helen Boulding – ‘Way To Go’

From Del Amitri all the way to Texas. Do you miss Charlene Spiteri and her MOR pop-rockers? You don’t? Then you may not like this song. ‘Way To Go’ is like an entire heat of The X Factor condensed into four long minutes; with Helen displaying the kind of vocal ‘talent’ that regularly causes the likes of Simon Cowell and Louie Walsh to wet their sensibly-gusseted pants. Speaking of reality TV, Helen’s got a bit of a pedigree – she co-wrote Pop Idol contestant Alex Park’s one and only hit. With a debut long-player recently made album of the week on Radio 2, if you find the pop-rock noodlings of KT Tunstall a bit too cutting-edge, this could be the girl for you.
